Volunteer at Idlewild

A small school becomes richer when thoughtful adults bring their knowledge, practical experience, time, and care into the lives of young people.

Idlewild welcomes parents, neighbors, craftspeople, professionals, artists, naturalists, entrepreneurs, and other community members who would like to contribute to a different kind of education—one grounded in nature, inquiry, responsibility, and meaningful relationships.

Some volunteers may lead a single workshop. Others may mentor a project, help care for the land, support a community gathering, or contribute regularly over several weeks. What matters most is not the size of the contribution, but its sincerity, reliability, and usefulness.

Introduce students to a craft, profession, discipline, or enduring interest through a practical, interactive experience.

Idlewild volunteers do not need to be professional educators. Real knowledge, lived experience, practical capability, and a genuine respect for young people all have a place here.

We are especially interested in people who:

• Are dependable, patient, and attentive
• Treat young people as capable individuals worthy of respect
• Can guide without controlling or taking over
• Are willing to ask questions and learn alongside students
• Communicate clearly and follow through on commitments
• Respect differing political, religious, and philosophical perspectives
• Follow the school’s safety practices and adult-child boundaries
• Help create physical, emotional, and social safety
• Are comfortable receiving feedback and working collaboratively

Volunteer opportunities are unpaid and depend on program needs, scheduling, insurance requirements, safety considerations, and mutual fit.
